A new Netflix documentary has just been released, focusing on a radio host who was catfished for nearly a decade.

Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare tells the story of Kirat Assi, a 44-year-old radio host who believed she had found love with a man named Bobby Jandu, who she met on Facebook. Given their shared connections within London's Sikh community, Kirat had no reason to doubt Bobby's identity.

Their friendship on Facebook soon turned into a romantic relationship, leading to an engagement after Bobby proposed while allegedly in witness protection. However, after nearly 10 years, Kirat began to question Bobby's authenticity when his repeated promises to meet her in person never materialised. She eventually discovered that their entire relationship was based on deceit, reports the Mirror.

While Bobby is a real individual, the account Kirat was communicating with was fraudulent. In a shocking turn of events, it is revealed that the person behind the Bobby Facebook account was actually Kirat's own cousin, Simran Bhogal.

The creators of the Netflix sensation The Tinder Swindler are behind the gripping new documentary, based on the popular podcast Sweet Bobby. With a plethora of shocking twists and turns, here are some standout moments that left us saying 'WTF'.

Kirat informed Bobby every time she used the bathroom

During the height of their digital romance, Kirat was constantly video calling Bobby. When he couldn't see her, he would become angry, leading Kirat to inform him every time she needed to use the bathroom in case he looked at the screen and noticed her absence.

As the documentary reveals, the constant face-timing became so intense that Kirat even started doing it while on-air as a radio host. This led to further tension between the couple when Bobby accused Kirat of flirting with a caller on her show.

Kirat unexpectedly met the real Bobby

In an unexpected turn of events, Kirat actually ran into the real Bobby at a nightclub. This encounter occurred after months of online conversations with the fake Bobby and years before she discovered the truth.

When she encountered the real Bobby during a hen party in Brighton, she attempted to initiate a conversation, but he didn't recognise her. Kirat, who was 32 at the time, attributed this to his drinking and the loud club environment.

She confessed that she didn't mention this encounter to the online Bobby until years later. If she had done so, she might have been able to expose the lies and deceit much earlier.

Kirat would eventually meet the real Bobby face-to-face again after hiring a private investigator to find his address, believing it was the same man she had been communicating with online. This decision would ultimately begin to reveal the truth that the real Bobby was not the person Kirat had been chatting with online.

Fake Bobby dated real Bobby's brother

Bobby was just one of many fabricated profiles created by Kirat's cousin, Simran. As the documentary discloses, Simran created around 60 fake profiles, establishing a network to lend some credibility to the forged accounts.

Some of the profiles used the photos and actual names of real people and duplicated their accounts, blurring the lines between reality and fiction, while other identities were entirely made up.

Among the fake profiles was one purporting to be Bobby's brother. It turns out that Simran, as herself, dated Bobby's brother JJ and had essentially created a fake profile of her ex-boyfriend and his family.

The catfishing lasted nearly a decade

The documentary Sweet Bobby delivers a gut-wrenching reveal that the catfishing lasted an astonishing nine years. Kirat, who put her life on pause in anticipation of Bobby's physical arrival, had faced pressure from friends and family to marry and have children - and it was a dream of hers too.

However, the excuses for Bobby's absences grew increasingly outlandish, including a fabricated shooting incident and a supposed entry into witness protection. It was during this period that Bobby made a virtual marriage proposal to Kirat, reigniting her hopes for their shared future.

However, the unravelling began when, after being given an ultimatum by Kirat, Bobby claimed to be en route to London. He later professed to be holed up in a hotel but not yet ready to meet her. Kirat's visit to the hotel revealed no evidence of Bobby ever being there.

Driven by frustration and despair, Kirat employed a private detective, unearthing the address of Bobby, who shockingly had no recognition of her. In a state of panic, Kirat contacted Simran, who, under the threat of police involvement instigated by the real Bobby and his alarmed family, admitted the deception.

Reflecting on the harrowing experience in the documentary, Kirat expresses her doubts about realising her dreams of motherhood now. She says: "Will I ever be a mum? You know, at my age now it's a massive question mark. But I've got to be responsible for my future. Simran never will be."
