Met Office says temperatures to rise above average despite weather warnings

The forecast for the week ahead indicates a turn towards milder but unsettled conditions

by · Wales Online

For the past few days Wales has been experiencing heavy downpours. From Tuesday evening until Wednesday evening, a Met Office yellow weather warning for rain has been issued, which you can read more about here.

But the forecast for the week ahead indicates a turn towards milder but unsettled conditions, with potential spells of heavy rain and strong gusts of wind emerging occasionally, according to the Met Office. Western Europe will experience southerly breezes, carrying a warm, damp air mass from the western Mediterranean and northwest Africa over the UK in the following days.

As this system moves on by Thursday, October 17, the UK can expect more wet and blustery weather to hit the western regions intermittently due to incoming Atlantic fronts. Met Office Chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert has had his say on the expected weather patterns.

He said: "Warm air arriving from the south will allow temperatures to rise above average despite it often being cloudy. On Wednesday, parts of southeast England could see 20 or 21C, with the mid to high teens expected across many parts of the UK."

He also warned: "However, this warm and humid airmass will bring with it a risk of heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms. Yellow national severe weather warnings for rain have been issued for southeast Northern Ireland, Wales and western parts of England on Tuesday night and Wednesday. A few places within these warning areas may see as much as 50-80 mm of rain fall in six hours."

In Wales, temperatures could reach as high as 15C, 16C or even 17C in some areas on Wednesday, October 16. While temperatures could dip slightly on Thursday, October 17, most areas could see a temperature of 15C according to Met Office weather maps. Temperatures could drop to 14C on Friday, October 18, but increase by Saturday, October 19 to around 14C to 15C for most areas in Wales. Looking forward to the latter half of the week, the UK is likely to continue to witness recurring stretches of rain or showers moving through, and while there may be a slight decrease in temperatures, they are expected to stay reasonably mild for this period of the year.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Holley said: "A low pressure system could bring strong winds to the north and west on Friday. This combined with high spring tides may result in some coastal impacts, potentially continuing into the weekend on some coasts.

"As we head into the weekend the weather will remain unsettled with further rain at times, and by Sunday there is a chance that a particularly deep area of low pressure arriving from the Atlantic could bring more widespread strong winds, especially in northern and western areas, with potential for some disruption in places.

"This low pressure system is not expected to develop until Friday near the coast of Canada, so at this stage there is still a lot of uncertainty about the strength and track of this system as it interacts with the jet stream over the weekend. We'll keep reviewing the need for any warnings over the coming days, so it's important to stay up to date with the latest forecast."
