Mike Tyson's surprising net worth, seven children and tragic family accident

by · Wales Online

Boxing legend Mike Tyson is gearing up for his clash with YouTuber Jake Paul.

Tyson hasn't fought professionally for almost two decades - his last bout came in 2005 when he lost to Kevin McBride.

He did partake in an exhibition fight with Roy Jones Jr four years ago but when he steps into the ring with Paul next month it will be for real.

Twenty-seven-year-old Paul, dubbed 'The Problem Child', has piled on the pounds to face his infamous opponent, who was one of the biggest sports stars on the planet in his heyday.

Plenty is known about Tyson - his high-profile ear-biting incident with Evander Holyfield will go down in boxing history - but his life away from the squared circle is just as colourful. Let's get to know a bit more about him...

Tyson's net worth

“Handling money is an art… You have to go somewhere and learn the art of handling money… No one’s born knowing how to handle money.”

At his height, the 58-year-old's net worth was $300million.

But due to his lavish lifestyle and associated financial problems - he was declared bankrupt in 2003 reportedly owing $23million at that stage - his net worth now is far more modest.

In 2010 he said: "I'm totally destitute and broke. But I have an awesome life. I have an awesome wife who cares about me. … I'm totally broke. I had a lot of fun. It [going broke] just happened. I'm very grateful. I don't deserve to have the wife that I have; I don't deserve the kids that I have, but I do, and I'm very grateful."

According to the Sun, he now has $10million to his name - despite Forbes stating his career earnings could even have been as high as $685million (£535million).

Personal life

Tyson has been married three times and has seven children. Tragically, one has passed away.

They are Mikey, Rayna, Amir, Miguel, Exodus, Milan and Morocco.

Exodus, aged four, died in tragic circumstances in 2009. She passed away after an accident in which she became tangled in a cord as she played on a treadmill at her home.

He has six children biologically and counts his second wife's oldest daughter as his own. He had his first child, Mikey, out of wedlock with Kimberly Scarborough in 1990.

He was married to Robin Givens from 1988-1989 but they didn't have any children. He had his second and third children, Rayna and Amir Tyson, with his second wife, Monica Turner.

They divorced in 2003 and Tyson went on to have his fourth and fifth children, Miguel and Exodus, with Sol Xochitl - but they did not marry.

The boxer had his sixth and seventh children, Milan and Morocco, with current wife, Lakiha Spicer. They have been married since 2009.

He said of his children: "Pray more and work harder. Be the hardest worker and believe yourself. I can't help them by giving them [my kids] money. I can only hurt them if I give them money.

"They have to learn because if they have no aspirations and experience no adversity, at the slightest fight they will give in."

Health complications

In the build-up to the fight with Paul, Tyson suffered severe health complications which saw him pull out of the original date for the fight.

Back in May, ahead of the proposed June showdown, Tyson suffered a health episode on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles which saw paramedics called upon the plane's landing.

"Thankfully Mr. Tyson is doing great," Tyson's representatives said in a statement. "He became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare-up 30 minutes before landing. He is appreciative to the medical staff that were there to help him."
