Anthony Volpe leads World Series outburst as Yankees keep season alive
· New York PostOne down, three to go.
The Yankees kept their season alive and avoided a World Series sweep by rallying past the Dodgers for a 11-4 win in Game 4 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium.
The game turned in the third inning when Anthony Volpe hit a two-out grand slam off of Daniel Hudson to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead.
It was the first time the Yankees had led in the series since Freddie Freeman’s 10th-inning grand slam in Game 1.
Freeman put the Dodgers ahead 2-0 for the second straight game in the first inning with a two-run blast off of Luis Gil.
But this time the Yankees fought back, Volpe scoring their first run on an Alex Verdugo groundout in the second inning.
Volpe was still on third after he shockingly did not score from a second on an Austin Wells double.
Wells, back in the lineup after getting benched in Game 3, added a critical Yankees’ insurance run with a long homer to right in the sixth after the Dodgers had cut the lead to 5-4.
The Yankees then broke it open in the eighth with Gleyber Torres’ three-run homer the big blow.
The eighth-inning outburst allowed the Yankees to not bring closer Luke Weaver back for the ninth after he had already thrown 1 1/3 innings — and likely keeping him available for Game 5 on Wednesday night.
It is the first step in a long road for the Yankees, who dropped the first three games of the World Series.
Game 5 is Wednesday night with Gerrit Cole starting for the Yankees against Jack Flaherty.
