Trees down, power outages in Status Orange alert

· RTE.ie

A Status Orange rain warning remains in place for four counties in the southeast amid reports of trees down and rivers overflowing.

Power lines were impacted by strong winds as a number of trees were down across Cork city and county.

The Nire River and Colligan River in Co Waterford alongside the River Slaney near Enniscorthy, Co Wexford were in flood.

Met Éireann said further flooding is likely.

The strong winds and rain caused poor visibility, high seas and made driving conditions difficult.

The ESB said power outages had affected around 3,000 customers.

It said the scale of disruption has been relatively modest and in line with past experiences of similar Met Éireann Status Orange rain and Status Yellow wind warnings.

ESB Networks crews are mobilised and are working to restore power as quickly and as safely as possible.

Met Éireann warned of possible dangerous driving conditions in parts of Munster and Leinster, with reports of fallen trees in Co Cork.

A boat has appeared to have broken from its moorings and run aground near Dunmore East in Co Waterford.

It has since broken up on the rocks.

The public were asked to avoid a section of road on the R671 near Ballymacarbry village earlier due to flooding.

However, Waterford City and County Council said it has reopened.

Met Éireann said Co Waterford will remain under a Status Orange weather warning for heavy rain until midnight alongside counties Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford.

It warned of heavy rain with some intense, thundery downpours during the alert.

The forecaster also said that there could be flooding and travel disruption.

The forecaster issued a Status Orange rain warning for counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford, but has since been stood down.

It was initially in effect from 1pm until midnight.

An orange rain warning for Cork and Waterford expired at 6pm.

There are reports of trees down on the R639 just outside Rathcormac, Co Cork, as well as on the Bog Road in Youghal and also in the Monkstown area of Cork city.

A Status Yellow rain warning has been issued for counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Wicklow. The warning came into effect at midday and is valid until midnight.

Another yellow rain warning was issued for counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford, which expired 8pm.

The Road Safety Authority has urged road users to exercise caution while driving, and to check local traffic and weather conditions before setting out on a journey.
