Two arrested after man dies following assault in Mayo

Two men have been arrested after a man in his late 50s died following a suspected assault at an apartment in Ballina, Co Mayo, last night.

The man was found with serious injuries at the apartment on Tone Street in the town shortly after 11.45pm and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood he was from the area.

Two men, aged in their late 20s and early 30s, have been arrested in connection with the investigation and are being held at a garda station in the west of the country.

Garda technical experts are conducting a forensic examination at the scene this afternoon. The property is one of a number of apartments located above a business premises in the centre of Ballina.

The investigation is still at an early stage and detectives are working to piece together the exact chain of events that led to the man's death.

His body remains at the scene, pending the arrival of staff from the Office of the State Pathologist.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone with camera footage, including dash cam, from the Tone Street and surrounding areas last night, to contact Ballina Garda Station at 096 20550, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
