A man in his 70s has died following a house fire in Cork city this morning.

Emergency Services were alerted at 10.40am after the alarm was raised by family members and neighbours.

Three units of the Cork City Fire Services, as well as gardaí and HSE ambulance responded to the call to a home at Grange Cottages in Douglas.

Third Officer Ger Ryan said when they arrived at the scene, they were greeted by family members who told them there was a man in the house.

The crew wearing breathing apparatus as a precaution searched the house and found an elderly man in a room in the house.

He was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Third Officer Ryan said there was evidence of a fire in the room overnight which had burnt itself out.

It had not spread to other areas of the house.

A garda investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way.
