New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week

by · Variety

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to so many release date changes. With the WGA and actors’ strikes resolved and summer blockbusters rolling in, September is filled with both big-budget flicks and new indie releases.

Premiering Sept. 20 is the animated action comedy “Transformers One,” which chronicles the untold origin stories of Optimus Prime and Megatron in a time when they were close allies rather than sworn enemies. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson and Keegan-Michael Key.

Also on Friday, “The Substance” arrives in theaters. Starring Margaret Qualley, Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Hugo Diego Garcia, the horror drama follows an aging celebrity who uses black-market drugs to create a younger version of herself.

Two films getting limited releases this week are A24’s “A Different Man,” a comedy about a man who undergoes dramatic facial reconstruction surgery only to become fixated on an actor who forewent the same procedure, and “Wolfs,” a crime thriller about two rival fixers starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. Keep an eye out for “The Wild Robot” and “Megalopolis,” which both release next week.

Check back each week to find the latest releases in theaters, from major wide releases to niche independent titles.
