I played for Arsenal and now I want beat them after £1.5m transfer

Former Arsenal midfielder Sam Greenwood has warned the Gunners that Wednesday's Carabao Cup trip to Preston will not be as straightforward as some people think.

Mikel Arteta's side travel to Deepdale looking to progress to the quarter-final of the competition for the first time in three years. The Gunners reached this stage after thrashing League One side Bolton 5-1 but now face a step up in opponent with Championship outfit Preston in the fourth round.

Preston, managed by ex-Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom, threw away a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 at Wayne Rooney's Plymouth on Saturday but have been in confident form of late. In fact, the Lilywhites have lost just one of their last nine matches and beat Fulham in the last round.

And Greenwood, who spent two years in the Arsenal academy between 2018 and 2020, is in confident mood ahead of the game and doesn't think it will be an "easy" ride for Arteta's Gunners.

"It has definitely made me a better player, training with players like that day in, day out," Greenwood told the Lancashire Post. "It was very good for me, personally. It was competitive every day, even at youth level. It was brilliant and has set me in good stead for the future.

"It obviously makes (Wednesday) a bit more exciting for me. Anything can happen in a cup game. We have just got to believe in ourselves. It's kind of a free hit; we know how good they are.

"They are one of the best teams in the world. We've just got to give it everything and hopefully we can win. The pressure is on them I would say. We can raise our game, but if we give it our all then they are obviously going to find it hard. It is not going to be easy for them, I don't think.

He added: "We will play our game and hope for the best. "We appreciate the fans turning out for games like this. We can see where we are at and compare ourselves against a top quality club. You don't want them to have an easy night."
