Arsenal get referee who irked Jurgen Klopp in previous meeting for Liverpool showdown

by · football.london

Anthony Taylor will officiate Arsenal's clash against Liverpool this weekend. The Merseyside outfit head into that showdown on a high - after shrugging off any potential international break blues with victories over Chelsea and RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Despite a demanding fixture schedule, Liverpool successfully tackled the challenges, defeating the Blues at Anfield and securing a win in Germany courtesy of Darwin Nunez's first-half goal. That tough run continues as they travel to north London to face Mikel Arteta's side.

Taylor has overseen more Liverpool games than any other club, including two this season, with the Reds emerging victorious in 34 out of the 62 matches that he has officiated. The Manchester-born referee was in charge during Liverpool's 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium last season - a result which saw Jurgen Klopp's men start to drop out of the title race.

Of the 50 Arsenal games that Taylor has refereed, the Gunners have only tasted defeat eight times - winning 30 and drawing 12. He was also the man in the middle for Arsenal's goalless draw with Manchester City, last season, while their most recent victory under his watch was the aforementioned win over Liverpool.

That match reignited a long-standing feud with the former Liverpool manager, who was seething after Ibrahima Konate was controversially sent off. Klopp said: "A lot of things were against us.

"This referee gave me a red card against Man City for wrestling a situation between Bernardo Silva and Mo Salah. Today same situation with [Diogo] Jota, but didn't get a red card.

"It's unbelievable, then the holding of Kai Havertz on Konate for his first yellow card. Then Havertz goes down and the referee gives Konate a yellow card. Gabriel then does the same to Nunez and no yellow card."

Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will assist Taylor at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Michael Salisbury and Darren Cann will oversee VAR duties at Stockley Park.
