Gary Neville makes new Premier League title prediction after Liverpool and Man City drama

Both Liverpool and Manchester City earned big victories over the weekend as they saw off Chelsea and Wolves respectively and Gary Neville has shared his thoughts on the title race

by · The Mirror

Gary Neville has not changed his mind on Liverpool’s title chances despite the Reds reclaiming top spot.

Arne Slot's side squeezed past Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday - with Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones scoring the goals for the home side. The victory leaves Liverpool one point clear at the top of the league after a near-perfect start under their new manager.

Nearest rivals Manchester City are marginally behind. Pep Guardiola’s side earned their own slender win at the weekend as they netted a late winner to see off Wolves at Molineux.

And despite how close the two sides are, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville still has a clear favourite. After watching Liverpool’s win against Chelsea, he said: "Would these two teams [at Anfield] win the title? I don't think so.

"What Liverpool are doing defensively at the moment is interesting. I'd like to assess it at Christmas. I still think they're short.

"Chelsea are short, they're not going to win the league. I think Arsenal are the only team that can take on City. But you can't afford to fall too many points behind."

It is not the first time that Neville has dismissed Liverpool’s chances of lifting the title in Slot’s debut campaign at Anfield. Speaking after the Reds’ own slender win against Wolves earlier this season, he said: “They're going to have a good season it looks like and maybe get Champions League football.

"I didn't feel like I was watching title winners [at Wolves], being honest with you. They're well below Arsenal and City but I don't think that's shocking anybody."

Both Liverpool and City will be aiming to keep their respective title pushes on track this weekend. Pep Guardiola’s side take on struggling Southampton at the Etihad Stadium, while Liverpool face off with potential rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

While Neville does not believe that Liverpool will win the title, ex-Red Patrik Berger has suggested that they are right in the mix and only injuries could see a challenge for the Premier League derail.

He said: “He [Slot] couldn’t ask for a better start obviously. But as i said, it is a long season and they’re going to judge him at the end of the season. They’re playing well, winning games and getting points. There’s so many competitions but so far so good. Let’s wait until the end of the season.

“The beginning of the season, I felt he likes to play the same team every single game. Today, he changed a few players. He feels there’s so many games coming up that he has to start to rotate and keep the players happy. I feel like if they can keep the players fit and no suspensions, there is no reason why they couldn’t carry on as they have done so far.”
