The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) have appealed against the decision that saw tennis world No.1 Jannik Sinner cleared of blame after testing positive for a banned substance.

WADA has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) and claim that Sinner should be banned for 'between one and two years'. The agency described the decision of the International Tennis Integrity Agency to exonerate the 23-year-old earlier this year as 'not correct'.

Sinner was cleared of any wrongdoing after twice testing positive in March during the Indian Wells tournament. The Italian had low levels of a metabolite of clostebol, which is a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass.

The US Open champion was suspended provisionally but challenged the decision was allowed to continue playing as a result. In August the ITIA said that Sinner had been inadvertently contaminated with the substance by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.

“It is WADA’s view that the finding of ‘no fault or negligence’ was not correct under the applicable rules," WADA said.

“WADA is seeking a period of ineligibility of between one and two years. WADA is not seeking a disqualification of any results, save that which has already been imposed by the tribunal of first instance.”
