Liverpool news: Mo Salah contract update as Arne Slot gives players Man City challenge

Mohamed Salah's contract situation is still in the spotlight, with the Liverpool forward now linked with Paris Saint-Germain ahead of his deal expiring in June

by · The Mirror

Arne Slot has enjoyed a record-breaking start to life as Liverpool manager - but he knows it's only the beginning.

The Dutchman has won eight of his opening nine games in charge of the Reds, making the first manager in Liverpool history to do so. Wednesday's hard-fought 2-0 win at home to Atalanta in the Champions League also made it five wins in a row and now the task is to make it six at struggling Crystal Palace before the international break.

But there's more to focus on than Slot's start, as fans want to know the futures of key players such as the in-form Mohamed Salah, whose contract situation is simmering away in the background. There's also talk of a title charge, with Slot already knowing what's required to end Manchester City's dominance.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from Anfield.

Salah contract update amid PSG links

Arne Slot laughed off yet another question about the future of Mohamed Salah, whose contract expires at the end of this season. Like Liverpool team-mates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, Salah is on course to be a free agent come next June unless a new deal is agreed.

"It's the same boring answer as always," Slot told reporters on Friday. "I could really understand if you ask me this once every two weeks but if you ask me this after two or three days again then you still get the same answer and people feel that I'm boring them! So, try it after the international break again!"

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly plotting a free transfer for the Egyptian winger, with the French giants preparing a lucrative three-year package.

Slot sets Man City challenge

Arne Slot thinks he knows how Liverpool can bridge the gap to Manchester City - win more away games. The Reds' record on the road set them back last season and was a big part of why Jurgen Klopp's side couldn't keep pace with Pep Guardiola's champions.

Liverpool won 2-1 away to Wolves last weekend and ahead of the trip to Crystal Palace, Slot explained: "If you are purely looking at it from a data point of view then it was a 10 point difference to City [on away points collected]. If you look at the home form of both teams then the £10million question is why is this?"

Slot's thinly-veiled Klopp dig

Arne Slot is no carbon copy of Jurgen Klopp - and his feelings surrounding those dreaded 12:30 kick-offs away from home prove that. Klopp constantly moaned about being scheduled to play in the weekend's earliest slot, but his successor isn't complaining.

"Every away game is difficult," Slot explained. "10 of 18 away games didn't lead to a win (last week). People talk about 12:30pm, we talk about difficult away games. If 12:30pm was a difficult time to perform then I am a stupid manager because I train every day at midday!"
