'Bride invited my husband to wedding but won't let me come – it's weird and rude'

A woman revealed her surprise after learning her husband was invited to be a witness at a wedding – but he has to go solo and she's rather baffled by the reason

A woman is confused after her husband was invited to be a witness at the wedding of his close female friend - but has to go solo.

There hasn’t been any drama or “falling out”, yet she didn't make the guest list with her husband. The wedding is taking place in the same city where the married couple live, but the bride wants the husband to stay in a hotel the night before to “help set up”.

The married couple have been together for more than a decade, so the wife is uncomfortable and confused by this behaviour by her husband’s friend. She doesn’t understand why so took parenting forum Mumsnet to seek advice.

Planning a wedding can often be a juggling act between a couple’s wants and needs, versus the ideas, traditions and expectations of family and friends. The woman said she did ask her husband why his female friend doesn’t want her to attend her 100 person+ wedding.

While a wedding guest list is absolutely the decision and right of the bride and groom, the woman still thinks it’s odd not to invite a close friend’s long-term spouse.

Offering further information, the woman explained: “Bride-to-be has been invited to many social events we've hosted as a couple but has always declined to attend, preferring to only meet my husband on his own. He has been invited to many social events by bride-to-be and her future husband but I have never been included.”

Fellow Mumsnet users took to the comments section to share their thoughts on the situation. One said: “YANBU [you are not being unreasonable], it’s incredibly weird and rude, in my opinion.” Another surmised: “It’s clear she doesn’t like you, I’d say! Because yes it’s very weird.”

Many people asked why the bride-to-be “clearly” doesn’t like the woman because they viewed the lack of wedding invitation as a “clear message” of her disdain.

One person commented: “Obviously it's her wedding and her choice, she is right. We all have a right to be rude if we want to. But it's your husband's right to choose whether or not he accepts the invitation thus condoning her rudeness.”

Another described the idea of the bride having the woman’s husband as a witness at her wedding as a “very big deal” but said the fact she “won't acknowledge or respect his marriage” is “weird and rude”.
