A woman who had a half hour chat with late One Direction star Liam Payne was shocked to hear him say he was "f***ed up" because he was in a boyband.

The 31-year-old dad-of-one had been staying at a high-end hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, when tragedy struck and he fell from his third floor hotel room balcony window.

A fan described him as "desperate" to be recognised, claiming he announced himself unprompted, shouting "I'm Liam", to a queue of guests waiting for lift, who weren't "bothered" about who he was.

She said that Liam returned to the lobby with his laptop and was using the "accessibility setting" that narrated the emails he was checking, for "the attention", the woman known only as Rebecca explained.

Surmising that he'd spotted an email that "upset" him, Rebecca said: "Suddenly he took the computer, shouted 'f**k this s**t mate!' and started bashing the computer on the ground."

The singer's "out of place" behaviour "shocked" onlookers in the "high-end" hotel, but concerned, Rebecca said she asked him if he was OK. She explained: "But he just kind of grunted. Then he said 'I used to be in a boyband. That's why I'm so f**ked up'."

Shocked at his admission, she saw him get back in the lift, before a "British guy" apologised to the group on "his behalf", saying Liam "gets so high" sometimes. The witness said she appeared to be on drugs, and was acting in an "aggressive" way, but not towards anyone.

She added that he fell over when he returned to the lobby, with staff helping him in to the lift. Half an hour later, emergency services arrived after Liam had fallen from his balcony, on the third floor of the Casa Sur hotel.

Authorities in Argentina have released further information this morning, following the death of One Direction star Liam Payne.

Reports indicate the musician "jumped from the balcony" of his hotel room in Argentina, causing him to plunge to his death.

In an official statement given to The Associated Press, police authorities disclosed that the 31-year-old star "had jumped from the balcony of his room," seemingly dispelling any notions of an accidental fall or foul play. The devastating incident occurred during Payne's holiday in Buenos Aires with girlfriend Kate Cassidy, which included supporting ex-bandmate Niall Horan at a concert.

A preliminary autopsy indicated Payne died from "multiple traumas" leading to "internal and external bleeding" following the fall.

His One Direction bandmates have since paid tribute to their "brother", saying they are "devastated".

In a statement signed "Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry", Liam Payne's One Direction bandmates said: "We're completely devastated by the news of Liam's passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.

"The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam."
