Woman of the Hour is on Netflix and the film tells the story of how bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw escaped with her life following a dating show. After choosing to pair up with Alcala on The Dating Game, Cheryl decided to call off the date after feeling "creeped" out by him.

She was right to do so, as the serial killer had been hiding in plain sight, having already murdered a number of women before his appearance on the show. He was initially sentenced to death for five murders committed between 1977 and 1979.

He later admitted to two further homicides in New York, for which he was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. While he has definitely been linked to eight murders, his true number of victims remains unknown.

When he died at the age of 77 in 2021, it came to light that authorities believed he killed up to 130 people. He had compiled a collection of more than 1,000 photographs of women, teenage girls and boys, with many in sexually explicit poses.

A list has been compiled of some of his confirmed murder victims.

Georgia Wixted

Georgia was a registered nurse who was killed at the age of 27.

Her battered and bruised body was discovered on the floor of her Malibu studio apartment.

Robin Samsoe

Robin was abducted and killed in 1979 at age 12 and the murder became one of the most notorious cases in Orange County history.

She had been riding a bike from her neighbourhood in Huntington Beach to ballet practice.

Her body was found 12 days later, dumped off Santa Anita Canyon Road.

Cornelia Crilley

In 1971, Cornelia Crilley was raped and strangled with her own nylon stockings in her apartment.

The 23-year-old TWA flight attendant had just moved to the block and it was believed Alcala may have offered her help with moving in.

Ellen Jane Hover

In 1978 Ellen was found in a shallow grave in Tarrytown, having been killed the year before.

Her death made national headlines as her father ran the legendary Ciro's nightclub in Hollywood and her wealthy stepfather was a Manhattan attorney.

He had offered a hefty reward for justice to be brought.
