Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, known for The Huntsman: Winter's War, the film Kate is set against a Japanese backdrop and has been a hit with Facebook fans. However, critics were divided at its initial release, giving it a lukewarm 46% on Rotten Tomatoes and calling it "derivative".

Viewers were slightly more generous, awarding it 52%, while IMDb ratings settled at 6.2/10. The top user review on IMDb described it as a "Good looking, fast paced movie with good fight choreography and a simple story. Basically, a female John wick."

They added: "If not for a little too much sentimentality and a plot twist you can see coming from the start I would have given it an even higher score."

The advice to potential viewers was to "Keep your expectations low and your gratitude high and you'll enjoy this one."

Kate is available to stream now, exclusively on Netflix.
