James Anderson, 42, wants shock cricket comeback in IPL 10 years after last T20 appearance
James Anderson retired from England duty earlier this year but could be set to complete a shock return to the sport after registering for the IPL 2025 mega auction following a stint in coaching
by Daniel Orme · The MirrorEx-England star James Anderson could be set for a sensational return to cricket just FOUR MONTHS after retiring from the sport.
The 42-year-old stepped away from international test cricket in the summer. His final outing saw the Three Lions’ record wicket taker take a further four in an emotional farewell against the West Indies at Lords.
Anderson also stepped away from the T20 version of the sport a decade ago. Since retiring, he has been serving as a bowling coach with England and recently assisted the side against Pakistan.
But he could be set for a sensational return to playing. Anderson has registered for the IPL 2025 mega auction for the upcoming season.
He has a base price of INR 1.25 crore, which equates to around £114,000. Each IPL side have around INR 120 crore to spend on their teams, with the mega auction due to take place November 24 and 25 in Saudi Arabia.
Anderson’s former England teammate Ben Stokes will not register for next year’s tournament. The former had previously expressed a desire to return to white-ball cricket in some capacity.
“I might be in a bit of denial because I’m well aware I won’t play for England again, but I’ve still not made a decision on my actual cricket career,” Anderson told the Press Association in August.
“There’s definitely a bit of intrigue with the shorter formats because I’ve not played any franchise stuff before. Watching The Hundred this year, seeing the ball swing around, it makes me feel like I could do a job there.

“I know it’s a while since I played it and my age will get brought up again but I really feel I’ll be good enough to play that form of cricket.
“Once this summer is done, I can sit down and have a real think if I want to play cricket in some shape or form again next year. I’m quite open at the minute to thoughts of any sort of cricket, I’m still fit enough to play and I’m not shutting myself off to anything.”
Anderson has never played in the IPL before. And he did not have a long career on the T20 front with England. The former Lancashire man made his debut against Australia in January 2007, with his final T20 cap coming vs South Africa in November 2009.
