ITV Emmerdale John Sugden's lie 'rumbled' as he reveals Aidan Moore's identity

John Sugden has finally lifted the lid on Aidan Moore during a heart-to-heart with Victoria Sugden. But while he may have opened up, the cryptic newcomer could still be lying.

While he may have Victoria Sugden fooled, John Sugden has failed to convince everyone off-screen as viewers continues to speculate he has something to hide.

Oliver Farnworth rocked up the ITV village as the mysterious newcomer in August 2024, as his on-screen alter ego romped with Aaron Dingle, in a scene that reminded viewers of the latter's romance with ex-husband Robert Sugden, John's brother.

Since then, John has tried to keep half-sister Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) at bay but her intrusive questions and unwanted peeks into his personal life continued during this Monday's instalment of the Yorkshire-based programme.

After rifling through his belongings in his caravan and finding name tags in Aidan Moore's name, Victoria was viciously reprimanded as John wished he had "never met" her - harsh words he regretted during this Tuesday's (September 24, 2024) trip to the eponymous Dales.

Victoria and John were able to bury the hatchet, seemingly once and for all, as he finally revealed who Aidan Moore was. John explained Aidan was once his best friend while they were both serving in the army in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, a bomb planted at their base by an Afghan lad killed him, leaving John to grieve him in the time that has passed since.

Aidan Moore's name has been mentioned sporadically in recent weeks as viewers of the long-running show are convinced it could be John Sugden's real name. And while they continue to question John's identity, insisting he can't be related to Victoria, fans believe Aidan could actually have been John's ex-partner.

Over on X, multiple fans questioned whether John's story about Aidan was really true: "Anyone else not buying this John Sugden stuff? Like surely he's still hiding something about this Aidan guy, right?", one wrote. Another soap fan was sarcastic as they commented: "Oh now John’s telling Victoria about his life, he’s changed his tune."

Whoever Aidan really is, viewers of the Yorkshire-based programme unanimously agree that John is "not a Sugden" and that Victoria could find out in a huge DNA twist. "John needs to admit he’s not really a Sugden, because even if he is one, why would you want to be related to Victoria", one fan wrote on Twitter, now X. Another added: "So fake John is he going to contact real John at some point or visit his grave?"

A third continued: "I don’t think John is a Sugden", while another echoed: "are the tags his or his ex partners & he's pretending to be John Sugden?" One final viewer poked holes in John's story: "Wouldn’t all of a John’s stuff have been virtually destroyed when his van was submerged in the river - all looks in remarkably fine fettle considering."

Many theories about John Sugden have swirled online as viewers have been convinced he is keeping a huge secret from everyone in the eponymous village but, so far, the character has kept his cards close to the chest. If John is neither who he says he is or Aidan Moore, who could he really be?
