One Direction's drummer Josh Devine has expressed his heartbreak over losing his pal and former bandmate Liam Payne, who tragically died earlier this week.

The singer, 31, who reached global acclaim as part of the beloved boyband since 2010, fell to his death from the third floor of a hotel into the courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires. Reacting to the devastating news, Josh wrote: Heartbreaking news. I just pray for Liam's family, and all that knew and loved him."

He added: "Some of my fav memories in life were because of this man. No words." This was accompanied by a red heart split in two. According to US Weekly, following his fall, Liam had suffered a cranial fracture and a number of other serious injuries. Emergency Services chief Alberto Crescenti reportedly spoke to a local news outlet La Nacion and said: "Our role was to head there quickly, give medical attention and try to resuscitate him but his injuries were incompatible with life."

He reportedly added: "Based on what the team saw, there was apparently a cranial fracture and extremely serious injuries that led to his immediate death. The team could do absolutely nothing. There was no resuscitation because it was confirmed that he had died. The whole body had very serious injuries."

Liam leaves behind his parents and his only son Bear who he shares with Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy. Liam quickly rose to the dizzy heights of fame along with his bandmates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson, as part of the globally renowned One Direction. After appearing on X Factor in 2010, the band went on to create music garnering a legion of fans around the world. And Josh was there with them on drums while Sandy Beales was on bass and Dan Richards played guitar.

But in 2015 the lads left their fans inconsolable when they announced they were taking a break. Speaking at the time of the band's hiatus, Josh told Entertainment Weekly in 2015: "It wasn’t a shock so much as … I think they definitely need it. When you’ve been on the road for five years, it’s inevitable. People are going to need a break and it’s going to be nice for the boys, for them to just go ahead and live a bit more of a free life. It was going to happen at some point."

He added at the time: "Everyone knew that it wouldn’t last forever, nothing ever does, so it wasn’t so much of a shock. But it’s getting to be more and more of a shock the closer it gets! I’m thinking, like, ‘Damn, this is real!’" Following the split, Josh happily recalled the times he shared with the boyband. He said in 2023: "13 years of One Direction! What a blast reliving some old memories today."
