Mike De Decker caused one of darts' greatest upsets to beat world no.1 Luke Humphires and win the World Grand Prix final 6-4.

The planet’s top-ranked player kicked off his stranglehold on the sport by winning this competition 12 months ago though looked down and out before producing a remarkable comeback to push his opponent all the way. De Decker was the story of the tournament, reaching the showpiece in Leicester.

Humphries, 29, raced out into a two-leg lead in the opening set, but had to hold his nerve to win the decider. The Belgian had a shot at double 10 to take an early lead, but after hitting the wire, Humphries made no mistake.

But just when the favourite looked as if he could run away with proceedings, De Decker hit back in a second straight decider to level the scores. The Belgian then dominated the third set to go 2-1 up with a whitewash of the reigning world champion.

There were shoots of a comeback in the fourth set when Humphries took the first leg, but normal service soon resumed and De Decker powered to a 3-1 set lead, clocking out in the final leg with a magnificent 154.

De Decker then went 2-0 up in the fifth set but the pressure got to the Belgian, allowing Humphries to claw himself level, with his opponent missing six darts to take the set. The 28-year-old got himself back on track in the deciding leg, taking advantage of a trebleless visit from Humphries to go 4-1 up.

Humphries looked down and out in the next set, once again falling 2-0 behind. But he showed why he is held up as arguably the best darts player in the world by pulling off a remarkable fight back to claim his second set of the night.

First, he hit an incredible 149 to pull a leg back before levelling things up with a ridiculous 152 as De Decker sat on 66. He then checked out from 50 in the deciding leg to make the score 4-2 on sets.

Humphries pulled himself back to 4-3 in the next set as he stormed to a 3-1 on legs, despite De Decker checking out 156 for his leg win. The duo traded blows in the next set before Humphries checked out on 67 to level the game on sets.

De Decker put an end to Humphries' dominance to take a 5-4 lead when checked out from 80 to win the ninth set 3-1. Needing to win the final two sets of the match, Humphires started well to go 1-0 up in the tenth set.

But De Decker levelled the set with a dominant leg with the the throw before breaking Humphries to go 2-1 up. Humphries would not go down without a fight though and he punched in D10 to level the set.

But De Decker would finally get the win his performance deserved when he checked out from 55 to become World Grand Prix champion. De Decker's win makes him just the second Belgian to win a televised PDC event. Humphries now heads to the Alexandra Palace next month with his pride and hold over the sport dented.
