Arne Slot reacts to his Liverpool side setting 'almost impossible' new record

Liverpool maintained their perfect record in the Champions League this season to top the group stage alongside Aston Villa after Darwin Nunez's goal proved enough to beat RB Leipzig

Arne Slot has hailed his Liverpool side after the Reds' win over RB Leipzig saw them claim two club records.

Darwin Nunez's strike proved enough to hand Liverpool victory against the Bundesliga side to continue the club's 100 per cent record in the Champions League. It has seen Slot continue an electric start to life at Anfield since succeeding Jurgen Klopp over the summer.

The Dutchman's tenure has seen his side become the first Liverpool team to win their first six away matches of the season, and the first side to win 11 of their opening 12 matches across all competitions. The unprecedented start has surprised even the former Feyenoord boss.

Such is the club's success, Slot believes setting new records is 'almost impossible'. His focus remains on winning trophies like teams of the past however.

"I think I said before that we should be proud because so many great teams have worn this shirt, so many great players have been at this club," Slot said.

"To achieve something that was not achieved before is almost impossible at a big club like this. To achieve it is always nice but as I said about other records, records are nice but other things are nicer than records and you know what I mean by that - trophies."

Slot was pleased to see his team control the game against Leipzig, despite the narrow scoreline. The 46-year-old was left frustrated with aspects of his side's performance in the Premier League win against Chelsea and he was happy to have bounced back.

"The way I looked at this game, for me we had a large part of the game total dominance as we did in all the games except for Chelsea," said Slot. "I'm not worried at all about this game.

"I was a bit more worried after the Chelsea game but this is what I like to see, the team play with much more possession, freeing up the midfield.

"In the end it's a pity that you still need your two centre-backs to play such a big game and your goalkeeper to make two big saves. A game like this should have been ours after 60 or 70 minutes and that's why the last 20 minutes were so difficult for us."

Despite holding just a 1-0 lead, Slot replaced star forward Mohamed Salah just after the hour mark. The Reds boss conceded with a difficult set of fixtures and precarious injury list, that he had to look after his players ahead of a trip to Arsenal.

The Dutchman added: “It is a tough fixture list. We have some injuries now so I have to take care of the players. Sunday is a big game coming up and I need to use as many players as I can for these tough months.”
