Halloween is drawing closer and that means it’s the perfect time to stock up on chocolate and sweets.

Many people may be planning their ghoulish outfits for an evening of trick-or-treating, and while there’s an abundance of brands sure to make an appearance in Halloween buckets and bags, it transpires many people are pronouncing some of the most well-known ones completely wrong.

With this in mind, the team at QuillBot rounded up some of the most popular chocolate bars and sweets you may see this spooky season and revealed exactly how they should be pronounced.

One such item sure to be a feature this Halloween is the trusty M&Ms. The sweet treats come in a wide variety of flavours, such as caramel, peanut, and classic chocolate, ensuring the tiny confectionery garners widespread recognition.

While it is a simple classic, plenty of us get confused about how to pronounce the brand’s famous name. People frequently pronounce it as "em-en-ems," but the correct pronunciation is "em-and-ems," emphasising the "and".

Other variations have popped up too, with one person taking to X, formerly Twitter, to share their child’s adorable pronunciation of the multicoloured chocolate treat. They penned: “My child thinks that M&Ms are called MMMs (like em-em-ems) and if it isn't the cutest.”

On Facebook, an Australian podcast named Not My Cup of Tea mocked one of their hosts for pronouncing the brand name correctly. Kicking things off, host Mitchell Coombs said to one of his co-presenters, Aishlin Garnett: “Darling, you’ve been screwing up big time and I don’t think you even know. You’ve been mispronouncing a certain word for as long as I’ve known you.”

Mitchell then “lured” her into saying the company's name by asking what she’d call the “small, round, chocolate candy” that are all “different colours” but aren’t Smarties. Co-host Aishlin then replied: "M&M's correctly emphasising the 'and'."

The host continued: “Why do you put so much emphasis on the ‘and’ and the second ‘em’?” But Ashley replied: “Because there’s an ‘and’ in the middle - they are ‘em and ems’, okay? The last ‘em’ doesn’t get any credit, it just gets morphed into the ‘and’. I don’t know why I’m getting so angry about this - ‘em and ems’.”

Fellow co-host Talecia Vescio insisted the brand’s name should be pronounced ‘em ‘n’ em’, which is incorrect. The debate continued, with Talecia ultimately stunned after being reminded of the M&Ms logo, which clearly contains an ampersand depicting the word ‘and’.

M&Ms have been around since the 1940s. The company name comes from the first initials of the last names of the chocolate founders, Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie.
