Donald Trump’s major backer, Elon Musk, has been in regular contact with Vladimir Putin since late 2022, according to a US report.

The claim comes as the world ’s richest man continues to criticise US military aid to Ukraine and as the former president touts him for a role in his government if he is re-elected. The report by the Wall Street Journal comes at a particularly sensitive time in the November 5 White House race, as Russia’s interference in American elections has been previously confirmed by US intelligence.

The news has raised serious concerns among Washington officials, particularly as Musk’s influence on and around Trump grows, raising questions about potential motivations behind his talks with the Russian autocrat. Putin once said of the SpaceX founder: “There’s no stopping Elon Musk. He’s going to do what he thinks he needs to do. You need to find some common ground with him. You need to search for some ways to persuade him.”

As the owner of Tesla and social media platform X, the businessman commands vast financial resources and substantial influence over voters. His dealings with Putin have triggered calls for closer scrutiny of his actions and relationships.

Trump has been vocal about reducing US commitments to Ukraine, and Musk’s own platform, X, has become a hub for the former president’s base and their conspiracy theories. Many on the right view his support as a boost to Trump’s campaign, especially as Musk criticises US policy decisions that directly affect the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Analysts, however, are raising alarm that Musk’s political stances could be shaped by his behind-the-scenes communications with foreign leaders, including Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Sources claim that at one point, the Russian dictator asked Musk to stop activating his Starlink satellite network over Taiwan as a favour to China.

The request underscores Musk’s potential sway in global issues, given that SpaceX’s Starlink system is critical for supplying the internet to tens of millions. Musk’s satellite service has played a pivotal role in Ukraine’s resistance against Russian forces.

When Putin invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Musk offered the country free access to Starlink, which has since served as a lifeline for its troops on the frontlines. However, Musk later withdrew funding for the system, leaving Ukrainian forces with restricted access.

Tensions escalated further when the billionaire implemented limitations on the system’s use, specifically blocking Ukraine’s attempts to use Starlink for drone control in combat against Russian forces. In October 2022, Musk also began sharing what he called a “peace plan” for the war in Ukraine on X, which included suggestions that echoed the Kremlin's.

Musk’s comments sparked backlash from top Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who voiced concerns over his apparent alignment with Moscow's perspective on the war. Reports in early 2024 then indicated Russia’s military had even used Starlink technology on the frontlines, a development that has fueled further unease among US, UK and Ukrainian officials.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk’s communications with the Kremlin have been closely guarded within the US government. White House officials, however, appeared unaware of the ongoing contact between Musk and Putin.

Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesperson, confirmed one call between the two, describing it as focused on “space and future technologies,” though it is unclear if additional talks have been held. "It's all untrue, absolutely false information published in the newspaper," Peskov said today. Musk has not yet responded to the reports.
