'I was on Married At First Sight - fame went to my husband's head and he put me through hell'

Peggy Rose and Georges Berthonneau were one of the success stories from last year’s Married At First Sight, but the couple stunned fans when they announced they were separating

Married At First Sight UK’s Peggy Rose has opened up on her devastating break-up from Georges Berthonneau, and how fame “went to his head”.

The couple seemed to be on track to even outlast Tasha Jay and Paul Liba from last year’s MAFS, but after the E4 show finished airing, Georges called time on their shortlived marriage, leaving Peggy heartbroken. However, the 32-year-old has now revealed their relationship was doomed as Georges became obsessed with fame, and she “went through hell” following their break-up.

She said cracks in their marriage began to appear in December last year, just a few weeks after the finale of MAFS aired, and Peggy was troubled when Georges “started acting really weird around Christmas ”. But she decided to stay with him, even though her “gut” was telling her to leave. “Boys like attention, especially when boys haven't had the attention before. I feel they get a bit big headed,” she told The Sun. “He even said to me on the show that he's been sexually desired by all his ex-girlfriends. Who says that?”

She stayed with Georges and they travelled to Paris, the city of romance, to celebrate her birthday in January this year. However, their sex life suffered, and she confessed it “didn’t feel the same” as Georges wasn’t interested in getting intimate, which led Peggy to believe “something’s happened”.

They broke up at the end of January, but Peggy was confused when her husband “didn't want to go public with our break-up because he didn't want to deal with the public opinions and the attention” because he was “heartbroken”. Peggy said they issued a joint statement that confirmed the end of their relationship, but just a few weeks later - on Valentine’s Day - she went public with evidence that Georges had cheated on her.

She was sent messages, including pictures and video, from someone who had seen Georges on two dates with another girl in December, leaving Peggy devastated by the betrayal. “You can't cheat on someone and expect to get away with it,” she shared. “I was heartbroken. I remember crying my eyes out.” Peggy then admitted her family had “ended up loving Georges” and even trusted him, but she blamed herself for “letting down” her family. She sadly confessed “it was my decision, my mistakes, and I made my bed, so I've got to lay in it”.

Looking back on the break-up, Peggy believes it was “the best thing that’s ever happened”, and now she’s in a relationship with a new man, who she said shares the same values as she does. “He's just a normal guy, he's not a millionaire,” she beamed, as she revealed he also wants children, which is something Georges never wanted. “I was willing to stay with Georges, even though he said he didn't want kids and kids are a big thing for me… I just hope he's the one,” she coyly added.

Georges denied the cheating allegations, and bizarrely accused Peggy of “hand-delivering Christmas presents to her ex-boyfriend”. He fumed: “I never cheated on her, it was her actions that pushed me away - the actions we all saw on the show; gaslighting, manipulation, constantly putting me down. It’s boring now.”
