Arne Slot dismisses frequent Jurgen Klopp complaint after Alisson suffers injury

Liverpool have a major concern ahead of this weekend’s clash with Bournemouth after Alisson picked up a slight issue but Arne Slot is sure that it is not down to a problem that Jurgen Klopp regularly blamed

Arne Slot does NOT believe Liverpool ’s packed fixture list has anything to do with Alisson ’s injury blow.

The Brazilian goalkeeper is a doubt ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth. He is suffering from a slight muscle injury picked up ahead of the Reds’ Champions League clash with AC Milan.

He still played in Liverpool’s European opener at the San Siro but could be sidelined against the Cherries. Asked if fixture congestion could do with Alisson picking up his issue, Liverpool boss Slot was not particularly convinced.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Dutchman said: “In Holland we also have Eredivisie, so we (Dutch teams) also play games at the weekend and also play Champions League and Europa League so we also play in the week.

“There is only one difference and that is the upcoming week when we play the League Cup so until now I’ve not seen anything I wasn’t used to at my former club.

“The Premier League has four extra games compared to the Eredivisie and also the League Cup, that’s the main difference, but from the start until now I think we have played as many games as my former club and that’s not an issue for me.

“But the main difference between the Premier League and every other league in Europe – and you all know – is we have to play during Christmas and new year. In those moments that is the biggest difference between this league and all the other leagues.

“AC Milan had to play the weekend, they have to play Tuesday and they will also play the weekend. But the strength of the league, the quality of the league, the quality of Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth that is much higher than if you play an Eredivisie team that doesn’t play for the top-six positions. That is where it makes a difference.”

Slot’s message is in stark contrast to that of former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. The German was a regular opponent to the packed schedule of the English game.

Those complaints have continued this season - albeit not at Anfield. Manchester City star Rodri has suggested that players would be willing to go on strike should action not be taken. His side are set to play in the reworked Club World Cup at the end of the season.

Before that, Liverpool will be keeping a close eye on Alisson and his injury. Should he not appear this weekend, he will be hopeful of making a return next week against Wolves. The Reds take on West Ham in the Carabao Cup in midweek but Caoimhin Kelleher looks the most likely to start that game.
