Alpine confirm Mercedes engine partnership after shutting down F1 power unit project

Alpine confirmed over the summer their plan to move away from being a Formula 1 works team and start operating as an engine customer, shutting down their own power unit project

Alpine have confirmed they will use Mercedes engines from 2026.

The announcement comes after Renault announced its plan to shut down its own power unit programme. Enstone-based Alpine will now become a customer team and the tie-up with Mercedes has been expected for some time.

On Tuesday it was confirmed that, not only will Alpine buy engines from the German carmaker, but also gearboxes as well. The partnership will begin in 2026 when new power unit rules come into force and run for at least five seasons.

A team statement read: "BWT Alpine Formula One Team, Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, and Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix have entered into power unit and gearbox agreements from the start of the 2026 FIA Formula One World Championship.

"The multi-year agreement will see Mercedes-Benz supply BWT Alpine Formula One Team with power units for the duration of the new regulation era, from 2026 until at least 2030.

"Alongside the power unit, BWT Alpine Formula One Team will also be supplied with Mercedes gearboxes from the 2026 season. The team remains focused on performing in the strongest way possible in the 2024 and 2025 seasons."

Alpine currently use engines that were designed and developed at their French base at Viry-Chatillion. But, after years of under-perfomant engines compared to the other manufacturers on the grid, Renault made the decision earlier this year to begin the process of sunsetting that programme.
