Erik ten Hag made two of Man Utd's 'worst ever signings', blasts Gary Neville

In light of Erik ten Hag's firing at Manchester United, Gary Neville accused the Dutchman of making two of the worst signings in the club's history.

Gary Neville pointed out Erik ten Hag's decision to acquire Antony and Casemiro as the "two of the worst signings in Manchester United’s history".

The Dutchman was relieved of his duties on Monday (October 28) after a torrid start to the season that sees the Red Devils sit a lowly 14th in the Premier League table.

While the club have appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager, they are currently locked in talks with Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim who is their number one target to replace Ten Hag.

The 54-year-old's two-year plus reign at Old Trafford was filled with high and lows as while he delivered two trophies, the EFL Cup and FA Cup, his recruitment was widely criticised.

Opting to mostly target players who played under him at Ajax, Neville blasted two of his signings in Antony and Casemiro, with the former costing £86million including adds-on.

The former Real Madrid star reportedly cost £60m with both players having disappointed thus far in Manchester as the ex-United captain didn't hold back his thoughts on them.

"The performances have been really poor this season, the results have been shocking, the league position is terrible," Neville said regarding Ten Hag's sacking on It's Called Soccer!.

"His legacy is definitely winning two trophies in two seasons through a very difficult point. The recruitment to be fair has been appalling for ten years and he’s been a victim of that himself. I think he oversaw two of the worst transfers Manchester United will ever have made in the signings of Casemiro and Antony.

"They were signed for £140-150m in a panic after the Brentford and Brighton losses. I hope I’m wrong, I hope Casemiro can do a great job for the club for four or five years and I hope Antony comes good.

"But those signings are why United have had to go back into the transfer market and sign [Manuel] Ugarte and other players. That was the ultimate in poor management from those above Erik ten Hag. That should have been one big fat no when those two players became available for those prices and those salaries."

Van Nistelrooy's first game in charge will see him grace the dugout at Old Trafford against Leicester City on Wednesday (October 30) in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
