Adam Thomas struggled to understand Tom Dean's elimination from Strictly Come Dancing as he pleaded: "Make it make sense."

The Olympic swimmer, 24, was the first celebrity to be booted out of the BBC One competition on Sunday after a dance-off against Toyah Willcox and Neil Jones, who tried to impress judges and viewers with a jive to Nutbush City by Ike and Tina Turner.

But moments after he was announced to be going home, many viewers didn't understand why Tom Dean, who remained at the middle of the leader board after his dance with professional partner Nadiya Bychkova on Saturday, had been eliminated.

Multiple Strictly Come Dancing fans were adamant that Tom had been axed from the show due to its lack of female contestants but, like the majority, Adam Thomas admitted he couldn't "make sense" of Tom's elimination.

Taking to Instagram this Monday, September 30, the former Emmerdale actor and Waterloo Road star shared one of dancer Nadiya's posts on his story on the social media platform in which she thanked her followers for their supportive messages. But he captioned the post: "Make it make sense but it never does. Well done guys." A reference to his own elimination from the long-running show in 2023.

In November 2023, Adam Thomas was controversially voted off Strictly after facing his own dance-off against Angela Rippon. Angela, 79, and her dance partner Kai Widdrington performed their Waltz to Fascination by Nat King Cole while Adam and his dance partner Luba Mushtuk performed their Rumba to Dancing On My Own by Callum Scott in a bid to impress the judges.

After both couples had danced a second time, the judges delivered their verdicts with Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas unanimously choosing to save Angela and Kai.

Following this verdict, Adam notably said: "Seven incredible weeks, what a journey it’s been. I honestly thought I was leaving in week two and the fact that I’ve got this far I’m so proud of myself, I’ve had an amazing time from start to finish. I came here to learn how to dance and I’ve learned so much more about myself."

The elimination was a huge blow for Nadiya Bychkova, who was partnered up with a star for the first time since 2022. Over on Instagram, the dancer reacted to her elimination with a sad post, while many celebrities shared their own disappointment.

However on Monday, Nadiya returned to Instagram with a longer message, writing: "Tom had so much to give and I had so much I wanted to teach him. His improvement in the last 2 weeks has been incredible and I think, actually I know, he could have become a brilliant dancer. I’m devastated that you won’t get to see that."

She then added: "My 3-time Olympic Champion was an amazing student and is a wonderful gentleman. He will go on to bigger and better things and I know this year he could have had a brilliant Strictly story. I love this show and I want to wish the other couples all the best and I’m sure it’s going to be a great series."
