Lisandro Martinez disagrees with Erik ten Hag over who's to blame for Man Utd loss

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez bemoaned his side's inability to make the most of their chances following their 2-1 loss away at West Ham on Sunday afternoon

Lisandro Martinez focused on the glut of chances Manchester United missed in their damaging defeat to West Ham rather than the Premier League's latest VAR controversy.

The Red Devils fell to a late 2-1 loss at The London Stadium courtesy of a dubious Jarrod Bowen penalty, which was only awarded following the intervention of Michael Oliver and VAR after a coming together between Danny Ings and Matthijs de Ligt.

That proved to be fatal for United, who have made a sorry start to the season. They are now languishing down in 14th in the Premier League and find themselves behind the Hammers on goal difference.

Defeat will only pile the pressure on Erik ten Hag, who it's thought was at serious risk of losing his job during the last international break. And the beleaguered Dutchman was quick to call out VAR following United's last-gasp loss.

He raged: "In football not always the best team is winning. Today was clear + obvious. But clear + obvious wasn't how VAR worked. I'm not criticising any person, I am criticising the process. You have to show big personality to recall this decision. Big impact on score."

But Martinez instead referenced the numerous chances that his team-mates spurned in east London, which included Diogo Dalot missing an open goal.

Martinez told MUTV post-match: "I hate to lose. I hate losing and this club is not what we want. The expectations are really high and we want to win every game," said Martinez.

"But now it's time to accept it and be honest with ourselves. I want the best for this club and I'm pretty sure this club will be in the top and we will give everything to put where it deserves to be.

"I'm so frustrated, honestly, so frustrated because I see every day our skills and quality, and then those days when we finish a game and lose, miss many chances again, it's difficult to accept but we have to accept it.

"Everyone fights and we give everything but I think we have to give more and we have to know that football is a mental game and we have to keep believing until the end with hunger.

"Today, we played a very good first half, then in the second half we dropped, then yeah, we conceded two goals and we couldn't win the game and I'm so disappointed, honestly."
