UK weather: Indian summer on way as maps show Caribbean heat blast to bring warmer days across UK

The UK has been battered by strong winds and heavy rain over the past few days but some much-needed respite is on the horizon as long-range weather maps show when an Indian summer could arrive

The UK is set to enjoy a few more warm days in the coming weeks as we bid farewell to the last rays of sunshine before autumn and winter truly set in.

In recent times, the weather has taken a turn for the worse across much of the country, with the Met Office even issuing yellow and, on rare occasions, amber weather warnings for several areas.

However, according to WXCHARTS' weather maps, which utilise data from Metdesk, jet streams are set to bring warmer air straight from the Caribbean to our shores. This balmy breeze is expected to reach the UK on Sunday, October 6, travelling at speeds of around 130mph, the maps suggest.

While early mornings will still see single-digit temperatures, by midday, parts of the southeast could bask in highs in the late teens.

Monday, October 7, will usher in cooler conditions, with temperatures only reaching the low teens. Tuesday, October 8, tells a similar tale, with temperatures nudging towards the mid-teens, as shown by WXCHARTS' weather maps, reports the Express.

Although this brief spell of warmth will provide some relief after this week's downpours, the Met Office warns that more dreary weather is looming in October.

Their forecast for September 28 - October 7 reveals that the final weekend of September will be calm before "cloud and patchy rain will probably quite quickly spread into the northwest, and is increasingly likely elsewhere by Sunday."

The first week of October will feature periods of calm weather, but also "spells of rain, heavy in places, with a risk of strong winds."

The forecaster noted: "A more settled spell is possible, but less likely. Temperatures are likely to be near to or below normal throughout, and it is likely to be notably cold at the start of this period, before temperatures recover."

From October 7 to October 21, Brits can expect a cocktail of wet and windy conditions with occasional breaks of calmer, drier weather. "interspersed with some spells of calmer, drier weather. Temperatures will most likely be close to normal" according to the Met Office.

As Netweather forecasters peer into October, they're on the lookout for an Indian summer, which is typically marked by a warm spell. The Met Office defines an Indian summer as a surge in unseasonably warm temperatures during the months of October and November.

Their extended forecast suggests: "Although there is inevitably a fair amount of uncertainty at this range, it is looking probable that this period will be wetter than average for most of the UK, with low pressure systems and some heavy falls of rain associated with frontal systems and south-westerly winds."

They also predict: "Some colder outbreaks of polar air are likely to continue to affect the north at times, particularly the north of Scotland, while the south will often be in warm tropical maritime air."
