An air ambulance has landed on the M11 in busy traffic amid a 'police incident'.

Drivers have been spotted outside of their vehicles after the incident forced the southbound carriageway of the major motorway in Essex to close. Delays of over one hour have been reported in the area. People have been urged to avoid the area and follow diversions where possible.

A post on the National Highways website reads: "The M11 is closed southbound between J8 (Stansted) and J7A (Harlow) due to an ongoing Essex police led incident. The northbound is carriageway is currently held to allow the air ambulance to land at the scene.

"At this stage it is not known how long the carriageway will be closed for. Plans are being made to clear the traffic caught within the closure, please await instructions from officers on scene."

A statement from Essex Police says: "The M11 is currently closed in both directions between junctions 7 & 8 due to a serious collision. This is also impacting slip roads around Stansted Airport. Emergency services are working at the scene. Please avoid the area."

Diversion routes have also been put into place due to heavy traffic. Road users are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs.
