Liam Payne's dad has been given a police escort while he stays in Argentina.

Geoff Payne is in South America following the tragic news that his son had died, aged 31, after falling from the third floor of his hotel suite in Argentina. Liam's family are understandably desperate to repatriate his body. However, Geoff has been told that they must wait until the investigation into the star's death is complete.

According to a statement from the prosecutor's office, which was released on the official website of the Attorney General's Office, "the prosecutor decided that Payne Sr. be accompanied by a police escort while he remains in Buenos Aires in" as per the Rights and Guarantees of Victims of Crime law in the country.

The statement also says that the head of the investigation, Andres Madrea, has been keeping Liam's dad up-to-date with the progress in the case and the status of the various ordered tests, including the toxicological analysis performed on samples taken from the singer's body in his autopsy, which performed last Wednesday after his death at the CasaSur hotel.

It continued: "The representative of the Public Prosecutor's Office informed the father that the toxicological and histopathological studies complementary to the autopsy have not yet been completed, and that their results are necessary to decide on the release of the body. The Prosecutor's Office has already contacted the local British consulate for the 'corresponding legal procedures' regarding repatriation."

Madrera also reported that “numerous witness statements were taken to reconstruct Liam's final hours and the scene of the events, a process that is still ongoing with hotel workers , acquaintances, technical and medical professionals, and other people linked to the victim through their work.”

Liam had reportedly taken the mixture of drugs known as ‘pink cocaine’ before his tragic death last week. Materials extracted from the star's body in an autopsy last Wednesday had reportedly determined the presence of the Class-A drug, which contains a lethal mixture of MDMA, ketamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, benzodiazepine and crack.

Friends of the star have since claimed that the dad-of-one was "preyed on" by local drug dealers and had been clean just two days prior having undergone medical examinations in order to renew his American visa.

Now, Liam's heartbroken father, Geoff, who flew out to Argentina hours after his son's death has vowed to remain with him until he is able to return to the United Kingdom. However, prosecutor Madrea, the lead investigator into Liam's death, has warned the devastated dad that it could be ten days until the examination results are confirmed and he is unable to bring Liam back to the UK before this.
