Kansas City Chiefs could capitalise on Green Bay Packers 'fallout' to help Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs are in desperate need of wide receiver help after losing Rashee Rice to a season-ending knee injury - and Romeo Doubs could be the answer

The Kansas City Chiefs may be poised to take advantage of the reported rift between the Green Bay Packers and Romeo Doubs' apparent rift to strengthen their injury-plagued offence.

After serious injuries to Isiah Pacheco and Rashee Rice, Patrick Mahomes lost two of his top offensive players less than a month into the 2024 NFL season. Following Pacheco's leg break in the Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the defending Super Bowl champions have reunited with Kareem Hunt.

However, the Chiefs have yet to bolster their receiving corps after Rice injured his knee in a collision with Mahomes. Kansas City was quickly informed that it would not be a major contender in the Davante Adams sweepstakes after the Las Vegas Raiders star wide receiver's recent trade request.

There is, however, another dissatisfied NFL wide receiver who could fill in for Rice. According to CBS Sports, Doubs will be a top candidate to alleviate Chiefs head coach Andy Reid's headache caused by the spate of injuries after being suspended for missing back-to-back practise sessions.

The franchise is certainly in need of another player to catch passes following the loss of Rashee Rice, the wide receiver who endured a knee injury that has put him out of play and on injured reserve, potentially for the full season.

Romeo Doubs could emerge as the go-to guy for star QB Patrick Mahomes, especially when the current receiving group shines with the likes of rookie Xavier Worthy, Justin Watson, and JuJu Smith-Schuster at the helm.

Doubs has already racked up an impressive 169 yards from 12 catches in the opening quartet of games in the 2024 season. Yet, there's been tension, with Doubs disappearing from the Packers' training ground on both Thursday and Friday.

It led to significant concern from the team management about his whereabouts. What unfolded next was nothing short of a drama - Doubs had decided to strike, sitting out the crucial Sunday game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Packers' top brass Brian Gutekunst came forward to explain: "Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend Romeo for this week's game," citing the disrupted team dynamics as the reason behind their tough call.

"His decisions and actions during the week negatively impacted the team and required us to take this action. While we are certainly disappointed, we are confident that we will be able to move forward in a positive manner."

Even amid the controversy, Gutekunst expressed optimism about the future, adding: "Romeo is a valuable member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next week."

Despite the setback, Doubs closed out the regular 2024 season with strong stats, pulling down 59 receptions for 674 yards and notching eight touchdowns.

In the meantime, the Chiefs are off to a flying start despite their injury troubles. They're heading into the Monday Night Football showdown against the New Orleans Saints in Week 5 with an unbeaten 4-0 record.
