Anthony Joshua was knocked out by Daniel Dubois because he was too predictable in his attack, according to Conor McGregor.

Joshua’s career has been thrown into question after he was knocked down time and again by Dubois at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. Dubois successfully defended his world title in front of 96,000 people with an impressive display of power which saw him floor Joshua in the first, third and fourth rounds before a decisive blow in the fifth.

Defeat was Joshua’s fourth in his 32nd bout but the nature of it lays into question where he goes next after failing to win the IBF heavyweight title. The 34-year-old had been bidding to become a three-time champion and regain his status as one of the division’s big players, yet that dream now lies in tatters.

McGregor was an animated presence ringside at Wembley and he gave some thoughts in the aftermath. “Joshua was showing the same shot over and over – the step-back back-hander and the step-back uppercut,” he told The Stomping Ground while demonstrating the shots. “You need to either meet him or step and go forward.”

The Irishman was full of praise for the winner, adding: “He came in with no pressure – Daniel Dubois had no pressure on his shoulder coming in here. Very calm, very composed and it showed. He came out to go after him at the first bell.”

Joshua has a clause to trigger a rematch with Dubois and McGregor is certain he can bounce back, despite calls for him to retire. “AJ is number one,” he said. “This was his eighth stadium show, he’s a legend forever.”

Asked if there was a way back, he replied: “For sure there is. He smacked him back and stood his ground and then he went forward and got caught – that’s boxing, you get caught, you catch some. Of course he can come back, for sure.”

McGregor wants Joshua to take on Tyson Fury next. Before the fight he told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Tyson’s light and he’s fast on his feet but Joshua’s powerful as well. It’s a great fight, a cracking fight and it must take place. It must take place, no matter what goes on tonight, no matter what goes on tomorrow, the next day after – the two men have to fight.”

Fury is gearing up for his own bout against Oleksandr Usyk, but he looked disappointed at Joshua’s performance. “He [Dubois] did a fantastic job,” Fury said.

“He did a very good job and fair play to young Dan. Everybody wrote him off you know, coming here he was the world champion and everyone chatted like he was bum and he showed what he’s made of and it’s very good for him, fantastic, fair play.”
