Arsenal news: Gary Lineker slams Riccardo Calafiori decision after teammate’s 'lucky' claim

Arsenal secured a thrilling 4-2 victory against Leicester at the weekend but the fallout from the game continues despite attention turning to this week’s Champions League clash with PSG

by · The Mirror

Arsenal did not make it easy for themselves at the weekend despite their win against Leicester.

The Gunners looked to be on the way to a straight-forward victory after going 2-0 up in the first half. Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard had both scored to set the North Londoners on their way.

But two goals from James Justin levelled matters, with a stoppage time Wilfred Ndidi own goal and a Kai Havertz strike securing three points for Mikel Arteta’s men. Things don’t get any easier for Arsenal this week as they continue their Champions League campaign against French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

It is the Gunners’ first home European game of the campaign, and one they will be very keen to win. Ahead of that game, take a look at all of the standard Arsenal headlines:

Lineker slams Calafiori call

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker believes Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori should have been sent off against Leicester. Speaking after the game, he said: "He thought Calafiori should've had another yellow card. I find it difficult to disagree with him."

Ex-Arsenal star Theo Walcott agreed that the Italian should have been given his marching orders. He replied: "I agree, I thought it was very lucky, it was cynical."

Calafiori had picked up a prior booking, with Leicester left furious that he did not pick up a second caution for taking down Facundo Buononatte. The Argentine was instead booked for his protests.

Trossard makes “lucky” claim

Arsenal matchwinner Leandro Trossard claims that luck was on Arsenal’s side as they saw off Leicester. Speaking to the club’s official website, the Belgian wideman said: "It was just relief! I had some good opportunities and when the ball doesn’t go in, you need to keep believing and believing.

“It was great that the ball went in and gave us the lead again. Credit to the boys, everyone kept believing going forward and pushing to create chances. That’s what we need – if it doesn’t go your way at that point, you need to keep pushing and that’s what we did. In the end, the luck was on our side.

"Overall, I think we played a very good game to go 2-0 up at half-time and then the goals we conceded today, they were a bit too easy. It shows how you need to push for the other goals – we had some great chances, and their goalkeeper made some great saves as well but it’s nice to get those two goals at the end to get the win."

Palmer makes Bergkamp claim

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has admitted that he has not watched too much of Dennis Bergkamp after earning comparisons to the Arsenal icon by Theo Walcott.

The ex-Arsenal man said: “He has got a bit of finesse, Bergkamp, Van Persie about him, and they weren't bad at all.”

After being told about those comments, Palmer said: “I know he is a legend in the Premier League, but I didn’t really watch him. I was too young. I have seen clips, he was a top player so thank you, Theo Walcott!”
