Ruud van Nistelrooy has told Manchester United fans that he "only sees good things" ahead for the club as he prepares to end his four-game spell as caretaker manager at Leicester City this weekend.

The Dutchman has overseen two wins and a draw during his two weeks in charge so far and is looking to end his time in the hotseat with a first Premier League success, before discussions take place over whether he will take up a role in Ruben Amorim's backroom team.

Van Nistelrooy returned to United in the summer as part of Erik ten Hag's new-look staff and took over last Monday when Ten Hag was sacked after a poor run of form. Van Nistelrooy, who scored 150 goals in 219 games for the club between 2001 and 2006, has rekindled his relationship with United supporters over the past two weeks.

Writing in his final programme notes as caretaker manager, he expressed gratitude for the support he has had from the stands.

"I would regardless like to thank everybody for making me feel so welcome and supported during my time in the role," he said. "United fans have always held a special place in my heart but I can honestly say that my love for you all has only grown during this period.

"The support I have had from the stands at Old Trafford has been fantastic and I have taken memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Now, as we welcome Steve Cooper and Leicester City back to Old Trafford, we have an opportunity to end this block of games on a high."

Van Nistelrooy has steadied the ship during his time in the dugout and although his side head into the weekend still down in 13th in the Premier League, he sees a bright future ahead under Amorim, who begins work on Monday.

"The history at this club is incredible and it will always be a huge honour for me to have played a part in that as a player," he said. "Now, however, I am here as a coach looking towards the future. When I do that, I see only good things for Manchester United. I absolutely believe that this club has all the ingredients to get back to the levels I knew as a player, but it will take a lot of hard work and determination from everyone around the club to get there.

"From [Monday], I will be getting behind our new head coach, Ruben Amorim, and I urge everyone who loves the club to do the same. I have worked with this squad every day since the summer and I can tell you that there is huge potential in these players, from the experienced pros down to the lads coming up through the academy. The coaches, club staff and supporters all have a role in helping those players become the best they can be.

"Of course, it starts with players who hold themselves and each other accountable, because playing for Manchester United requires massive character, hard work and dedication every single day. There is no hiding place, especially with today's media environment, but that is the kind of challenge you have to relish. and meet head-on.

"You show courage, you fight and you show your talent for yourself, for that badge on your shirt and, most importantly, for the greatest fans in the world. Let me tell you, whether you're a player or a coach, there is nothing like representing Manchester United Football Club."
