US presidential election 2024 poll tracker for Trump vs Harris

by · Manchester Evening News

The US presidential election is just days away with tens of millions of people deciding between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

The race is currently too close to call and will likely depend on which colour a handful of of 'swing states' will turn when votes have been counted.

Polling day takes place on November 5 - however a number of ballots have already been cast in many states which allow early voting.

While ballots may say the name of each candidate, voters in the US do not directly elect their president. Instead, the individual votes in a state are typically reflected in votes cast by electors in the Electoral College.

Each of the 50 states and Washington DC appoint a number of people in their state known as electors, who make up the Electoral College.

The Electoral College is made up of 538 electors who cast votes on behalf of the population of the state, with 270 votes needed to win the presidency.

The number of people per state is roughly proportionate to the population, as it is based on the number of representatives they have in Congress.

That means it is possible for a candidate to win more votes nationally and still end up losing the election - as Hilary Clinton did in 2016.

Here is the latest poll tracker according to the Press Association as of October 31. The latest tracker has Harris on 48.3% of the national vote and Trump on 48%.
