United lost again

Manchester United player ratings as Casemiro good but two 5/10s vs West Ham

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United were beaten by West Ham United in their ninth Premier League game of the season.

United squandered one-on-ones, hit the woodwork twice, Diogo Dalot missed an open goal and Lukasz Fabianski pulled off a superb save from Casemiro in the first half alone.

West Ham fans greeted the half-time whistle with boos and United manager Erik ten Hag understandable opted against a half-time change amid United's dominance. Julen Lopetegui made a triple change and West Ham improved. Crysencio Summerville made it 1-0 in the 74th minute but Casemiro equalised seven minutes later.

After an intervention by the Video Assistant Referee, West Ham were awarded a stoppage-time penalty that Jarrod Bowen converted. Here are how the United players rated:

Andre Onana

Got a nasty whack in the head from Michail Antonio's knee early in the second half. Unfortunate in the way the ball fell to Summerville. 6

Diogo Dalot

Secured a nomination for miss of the season when he inexplicably larruped the ball high and wide with the goal open that was so costly. 5

Matthijs de Ligt

Held his own against the muscular Antonio at times but the introduction of new blood startled him and he got booked. 5

Lisandro Martinez

Comfortable in defence and attack for 45 minutes. Recovered after lengthy treatment and had a calmer performance than in midweek. 6

Noussair Mazraoui

Started at left back for the first time this season and West Ham's goal came down his side on an afternoon Aaron Wan-Bissaka has seldom attacked so much. 6

Casemiro

Crossed elegantly for Bruno Fernandes to head over and almost scored from a header himself but superbly denied by Lukasz Fabianski. Equalised in the second half. 7

Christian Eriksen

Another prudent performance and his free kick almost helped secure a first-half breakthrough. Faded in the second half and came off. 6

Marcus Rashford

Ran on to a direct pass for a one-on-one but lost control of the ball in front of interim England coach Lee Carsley. Substituted before the hour. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Had some days off in the week and missed the Fenerbahce draw through suspension and it showed. Fernandes had his best half of the season. 6

Alejandro Garnacho

Should have scored in the third minute but hit the crossbar and then slotted the ball wide from a one-on-one. Lost the ball for move that led to West Ham going 1-0 up. 6

Rasmus Hojlund

It was a quirk of United's dominant first half that hardly any of the chances fell to Hojlund. Stung Fabianski's palms in the 57th minute. 5

Subs

Amad

Had a role in the equaliser. 6

Joshua Zirkzee

Went for goal with his header but got the assist. 6

Victor Lindelof

Came on for Mazraoui at left back. 5

Manager

Picked the predictable team and United created enough chances to win a month-ful of games in. Made logical changes at the logical times but United tailed off the moment the first half ended. 6
