I heard what Graham Potter said about Man United manager links - he's playing a dangerous game

by · Manchester Evening News

Sam Allardyce believes Graham Potter is playing a 'dangerous' game in revealing he spoke to Manchester United about the possibility of becoming their manager in the summer.

United sounded out potential replacements for Erik ten Hag before opting to stick with the Dutchman. Ten Hag led the club to an abysmal eighth-place finish in the 2023/24 Premier League season, though May's FA Cup final success over Manchester City saw United secure European football and that result ultimately saved Ten Hag's job.

Just six games into the new Premier League season and Ten Hag is already under pressure with United sitting 13th in the table. Defeat to Aston Villa could spell the end of his Old Trafford reign, with Potter one of the names in the mix to replace him. The former Chelsea boss was a guest pundit on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football earlier this week, and he admitted to having spoken to United in the summer.

Allardyce believes Potter has now scuppered any chance he may have had of becoming United boss, claiming such conversations should have been kept to himself.

"Dangerous thing to say [admitting speaking to the club]. This means Man United won’t speak to him now, as far as I would say," he said.

"You don’t let something like that out publicly. You keep that as close to your chest as you possibly can and you get on your knees and pray United are gonna ring you.”

MEN Sport revealed earlier this week that United are prepared to stick with Ten Hag for their two fixtures this week. The October international break is on the horizon and failure to pick up a positive result at Villa Park on Sunday could see the Dutchman sacked.
