A police cordon was put in place on the platform of one of the city's busiest tram stops this evening. The Metrolink stop at Piccadilly station was closed throwing travel plans up in the air for commuters and thousands of football fans.

The alleged assault happened shortly before 6pm this evening (Wednesday). Police blocked off the station as they began enquiries into the incident.

A Greater Manchester Police (GMP) spokesperson said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing at this time. No arrests have been made. The force has not said if the incident was linked to the football.

The stop is one of the main departure points for Blues heading to the Etihad by tram and is thronged with fans each match day. Supporters were advised to use the Piccadilly Gardens stop or make the half an hour walk to the ground instead whilst the closure was in place.

The Bee Network apologised on social media for the inconvenience. At 7:45pm they said: "The outbound tram platform at Piccadilly has now reopened and normal service will resume in both directions. Thank you for your patience.."
