Greece 'request' England match is postponed after George Baldock tragic death

by · Manchester Evening News

Following the sudden death of former Sheffield United defender George Baldock, the Greek FA have reportedly been in contact with UEFA - seeking to postpone their Nations League match against England on Thursday night. Reports indicate that calls for the game to be called off have been made.

The 31-year-old full-back made 12 senior international appearances for Greece and qualified to play for the nation due to his grandmother's heritage. He tragically passed away in Athens on Wednesday night.

Baldock was discovered in his swimming pool after concerns were raised by his wife back in the UK. In a heartfelt statement, the family conveyed their grief. "We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss.

"We ask please the media respect our privacy at this time."

Despite ongoing communication - reported by the Greek outlet SDNA - UEFA insists the fixture at Wembley will proceed as scheduled. The Greek FA, against a backdrop of mourning and shock voiced through social media, will honour Baldock before kick-off, with players to don black armbands as they face a challenging game ahead.

The Greek Football Federation released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the loss of Baldock. The statement read: "With profound sadness and sorrow, the national team and the Greek Football Federation bid a farewell to George Baldock", as per reports from The Mirror.

"There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our own, young, man. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family."

After Baldock's tragic death on Wednesday night, England also issued a statement, which read: "We're extremely saddened by the passing of George Baldock. George was close to many of our players, and represented Greece - our opponents on Thursday night. We're thinking of George's family, friends and teammates at club and country at this difficult time."
