Police issue statement as missing mum found dead amid desperate search

Police have confirmed that officers found the body of a missing mum following a desperate search in Leigh.

Jane Burton was reported as missing in the early hours of Tuesday morning (November 12). Police said in an appeal that she was last seen in the Walkers Drive area at around 2am.

Throughout yesterday, a desperate search to find the mum, who was originally from the Cheshire area, was carried out in the local area. Emergency crews were spotted in the Pennington Flash area and in nearby woodland.

Police helicopters were deployed above the area, as members of the public also assisted with the search. Last night, it was confirmed that a body had sadly been found.

Today Greater Manchester Police confirmed that this has since been identified as being Ms Burton, with her family now being supported by specialist officers. The force added that there are not believed to any suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

A post on the Wigan and Leigh GMP Facebook page said: "#UPDATE | We can confirm that officers searching for missing Jane sadly found her body yesterday. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

"Specialist officers are supporting her family at this difficult time. Our thoughts remain with Jane's family and a file has now been passed to the coroner's office."
