Greater Manchester to remain dry this weekend amid storm warnings across UK - full Met Office weather forecast

Forecasters predict the weather will stay mainly dry in Greater Manchester this weekend - amid a number of thunderstorm warnings for other parts of the UK.

A yellow thunderstorm warning issued by the Met Office is set to come into force at 12pm today (Friday) and last until 8pm. It warns of 'thunderstorms and heavy showers causing disruption' in some areas across the Midlands, in London, East of England, South East, South West and Wales.

Another thunderstorm warning will then come into force at 1am on Saturday morning and last the entire day, with a large of part of Wales, the South West and areas in the Midlands covered by the alert. Some parts of Cheshire and Merseyside are also covered by this storm warning, but forecasters predict the rainy weather will largely miss Greater Manchester.

Instead dry conditions are forecast through much of the weekend with warm temperatures in the early 20s predicted on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Today sunny intervals are expected in our region with the mercury reaching highs of around 19C, according to the Met Office.

More sunny and cloudy intervals are then forecast on Saturday with maximum temperatures of around 21C. On Sunday a similar picture is expected in our region with the mercury reaching a high of 20C in the afternoon amid mostly dry conditions.

Wetter and colder conditions are expected to set in from Monday next week as we move into autumn. On the thunderstorm warnings issued for some parts of the UK this weekend, Met Office chief meteorologist Neil Armstrong, said: "Thundery downpours are expected to develop in places across the south on Friday afternoon bringing frequent lightning, gusty winds, hail, and spells of heavy rain.

"The risk of thunderstorms persists into Saturday with potentially longer spells of heavy rain for some along with a continued risk of hail and lightning accompanying the most intense storms, particularly in parts of the Midlands, southern England and east Wales during Saturday afternoon and evening. The warnings cover the areas of the country most at risk of seeing thunderstorms but not everyone within a warning area will experience a thunderstorm.

"For many much of the time it will remain dry. We are also expecting these showers to merge into longer spells of heavy rain on Sunday and Monday across some southern and central parts, and once the full details become clearer, we may well issue further severe weather warnings so keep up to date with the latest forecast for your area."
