Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda has already expressed his gratitude to Manchester United-bound Ruben Amorim as the 17-year-old continues to be tracked.

The Manchester Evening News reported on Tuesday that the Guinea-Bissau talent is being monitored by Old Trafford chiefs. It comes after the incoming United head coach signed off in Europe on a high for the Portuguese giants.

Sporting ran out 4-1 winners over Manchester City, with Amorim getting one over his soon-to-be rival, Pep Guardiola. Viktor Gyokeres, who is being widely linked to follow the new head coach to M16, netted a treble as the Liga Portugal champions came from behind to move second in the Champions League.

The MEN understands that scouts have been following the youngster's progression since the start of the season. Quenda made his first matchday squad, last November aged 16, before making his debut in August against Rio Ave.

"I will always thank him, he is a great coach, but now it is to continue working without him and let’s do it," the 17-year-old said on the departure of Amorim.

Quenda has three years remaining on his current deal in the Portuguese capital and has a reported market value of around €15million (£12.5m).

The 39-year-old will officially take up his position in office on Monday (November 11) and his Sporting farewell will officially come away at Braga on Sunday. He was given a roaring reception at the Estado Jose Alvalade on Tuesday, with supporters organising a banner to say thank you to the head coach who led them to two top-flight crowns and successive domestic cups between 2020 and 2022.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been in charge of United's last two on an interim basis and will take charge of his final matches against PAOK in the Europa League before facing Leicester City at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday. Amorim's first game in charge is set to be against Ipswich Town after the November international break - making his own at home to Bodo/Glimt in Europe.
