A new Netflix documentary, Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, tells the shocking story of a radio host who was catfished for nearly ten years.

The documentary follows 44-year-old Kirat Assi, who believed she had found true love with a man named Bobby Jandu on Facebook. Given their shared connections within London's Sikh community, Kirat had no reason to doubt Bobby's identity.

Their friendship on Facebook quickly turned into a romantic relationship, leading to an engagement after Bobby proposed while allegedly in witness protection. However, after nearly a decade of broken promises to meet in person, Kirat began to investigate and discovered that their entire relationship was based on deceit, reports the Mirror.

While Bobby was indeed a real person, the account Kirat had been interacting with was not genuine. In a shocking twist, it is revealed that the person behind the fake Bobby Facebook account was none other than Kirat's own cousin, Simran Bhogal.

The producers behind the Netflix sensation, The Tinder Swindler, are behind the documentary adapted from the popular podcast, Sweet Bobby. With a plethora of shocking twists, here are some moments that left us exclaiming 'WTF'.

Kirat told Bobby every time she used the bathroom

During the height of their digital romance, Kirat was perpetually on video call with Bobby. When he couldn't see her, he would become angry, leading Kirat to inform him each time she needed to use the bathroom in case he glanced at the screen and noticed her absence.

As the documentary delves into, the constant face-timing became so pervasive that Kirat even began doing it while on-air as a radio host. This led to further tension between the two when Bobby accused Kirat of flirting with a caller on her show.

Kirat unexpectedly encountered the real Bobby

In an unexpected turn of events, Kirat actually ran into the real Bobby at a nightclub. This chance meeting occurred after several months of conversing with the fake Bobby online and years before she eventually discovered the truth.

Upon spotting the real Bobby during a hen party in Brighton, Kirat attempted to engage him in conversation. However, his confusion led her to believe that it was due to the loud club environment and alcohol, rather than him not recognising her.

She confessed that she didn't mention this encounter to the online Bobby until years later, which could have potentially exposed the lies much earlier if she had.

Kirat would eventually meet the actual Bobby again after hiring a private investigator to find his address, under the impression that he was the same man she had been communicating with online. This move would ultimately begin to reveal the truth that the real Bobby was not the person Kirat had been chatting with online.

Fake Bobby dated real Bobby's brother

Bobby was just one of numerous 'false' profiles created by Kirat's cousin, Simran. As revealed in the documentary, Simran fabricated around 60 fake profiles to create a network that would lend credibility to the counterfeit accounts.

Some profiles used the photos and real names of actual people, duplicating their accounts and blurring the lines between reality and fiction, while others were entirely made up.

Among these fraudulent profiles was one purporting to be Bobby's brother. It turns out that Simran, as herself, had dated Bobby's younger brother JJ, effectively creating a fake profile of her ex-boyfriend and his family.

The catfishing lasted nearly a decade

The gut-wrenching twist in Sweet Bobby occurs when it's disclosed that Kirat, deeply invested in her relationship with Bobby, ultimately sacrificed her dream to marry and have children because of the catfishing. She had been holding on to the belief they'd eventually meet and start a family.

Her patience was repeatedly tested by increasingly outlandish explanations for Bobby's absences, ranging from a shocking shooting incident to entering witness protection. Yet, when he virtually proposed, Kirat's hopes were ignited once more.

The final straw came after she issued an ultimatum and Bobby claimed to be flying to London and purportedly checked into a hotel, yet refused to see her. Her visit to the hotel confirmed his deception as they had no record of him.

Driven to desperation, Kirat enlisted a private investigator to find his address and confronted Bobby in the flesh. Of course, the Bobby she met at the door was real, but he had no idea who she was. The discovery, and threat of police action from Bobby, prompted Simran to confess that she was behind the account.

As the documentary concludes, Kirat says: "Will I ever be a mum? You know, at my age now it's a massive question mark. But I've got to be responsible for my future. Simran never will be."
