People are only just noticing way they're saying M&M's is completely wrong

As Halloween creeps closer, it's prime time to stock up on chocolate and sweets for the spooky festivities.

Many are already planning their eerie ensembles for a night of trick-or-treating, and while we're set to see a variety of popular brands in Halloween hauls, it turns out some of the most iconic names are often mispronounced.

To clear up any confusion, the team at QuillBot has compiled a list of beloved chocolates and sweets, shedding light on their correct pronunciations just in time for the season.

A staple for this year's Halloween is the classic M&M's. These sweets, available in an array of flavours like caramel, peanut, and chocolate, are universally recognised.

However, there seems to be a common mistake when saying the brand's name aloud. Many say "em-en-ems," but the accurate pronunciation is "em-and-ems," with a clear "and" as demonstrated by the ampersand in its logo.

Social media has seen its share of mispronunciations - some of which are actually rather cute. One parent shared on X, previously known as Twitter, what their child adorably calls M&M's and it could easily be the sweetest thing you'll hear this Halloween. The parent penned: "My child thinks that M&Ms are called MMMs (like em-em-ems) and if it isn't the cutest."

Over on Facebook, the Australian podcast Not My Cup of Tea playfully teased one of their hosts for getting the pronunciation spot on. Host Mitchell Coombs initiated the jest, chiding co-presenter Aishlin Garnett for the way she says the brand's name. Mitchell began: "Darling, you’ve been screwing up big time and I don’t think you even know. You’ve been mispronouncing a certain word for as long as I’ve known you."

Mitchell then teased her into revealing the mistake by asking what she'd call "a small, round, chocolate candy" that come in "different colours" but aren't Smarties. Aishlin correctly answered: "M and M's", placing the correct emphasis on the 'and'.

Mitchell pressed: "Why do you put so much emphasis on the ‘and’ and the second ‘em’?" Aishlin defended her pronunciation and said: "Because there’s an ‘and’ in the middle - they are ‘em and ems’, okay? The last ‘em’ doesn’t get any credit, it just gets morphed into the ‘and’. I don’t know why I’m getting so angry about this - ‘em and ems’."

However, fellow co-host Talecia Vescio was adamant it should be said as ‘em ‘n’ em’, which is actually not correct. Despite the humorously heated debate, Talecia was shocked when presented with the M&M's logo, featuring an ampersand clearly representing the 'and'.

A staple confectionery, M&M's date back to the 1940s, its company name derived from the surnames of founders Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie.
