Police in Cheshire are investigating an alleged assault following an incident involving a Labour MP.

Mike Amesbury, a former Manchester councillor who is now MP for Runcorn and Helsby, was filmed following in the early hours of this morning (October 26) on Main Street in Frodsham, Cheshire.

In footage circulating on social media, he can be seen pointing at a man lying on the ground. He is heard saying: "You won't ever threaten your MP ever again, will you?"

Cheshire Police has confirmed it is looking into the matter. A force spokesperson said: "At 2.48am on Saturday, October 26, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham. A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street. Enquiries are ongoing."

Mr Amesbury says contacted Cheshire Police earlier today to report what had happened. He claimed to have felt threatened in the moments before the video was captured.

The altercation is understood to have taken place hours after a community safety meeting with police. John Roberts, owner of a taxi company in Main Street, Frodsham, said footage he had seen showed a punch being thrown and a man then lying on the ground.

Mr Amesbury said: "Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends. This morning, I contacted Cheshire Police myself to report what happened during this incident.

"I will not be making further public comment but will, of course, cooperate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police. I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

Labour confirmed it was aware of the incident and that Mr Amesbury would 'cooperate with any inquiries' police have.
