The Post Office has announced it could close up to 115 branches - in a move that has put around 1,000 jobs at risk.

The sites under threat, known as Crown Post Offices branches, are the last remaining locations directly owned by the Post Office and are largely located in city centres. In a major announcement on Wednesday, the Post Office said the affected branches could also be transferred to retail partners or postmasters - which means they may not all close.

The Post Office has 11,500 branches across the UK, the majority of which are run by independent postmasters, while some are operated by retailers such as WH Smith, Tesco, Morrisons and the Co-Op. Around 1,000 workers are employed at the at-risk branches, so these jobs have been put under threat too, while the Post Office also confirmed that hundreds of further roles could be axed at its headquarters as it looks to streamline back office operations.

Post Office chairman Nigel Railton said the shake-up would offer a “new deal for postmasters” by increasing their share of revenue and giving them a greater say in the running of the business as it looks to move on from the Horizon IT scandal, which saw hundreds of subpostmasters wrongfully convicted over apparent financial shortfalls caused by faults in the accounting software system.

He said: "The Post Office has a 360-year history of public service and today we want to secure that service for the future by learning from past mistakes and moving forward for the benefit of all postmasters.

"We can, and will, restore pride in working for a business with a legacy of service, rather than one of scandal. The value postmasters deliver in their communities must be reflected in their pockets, and this Transformation Plan provides a route to adding more than £250million annually to total postmaster remuneration by 2030, subject to government funding."

But Dave Ward, Communication Workers Union (CWU) general secretary, said: "For the company to announce the closure of hundreds of Post Offices hot on the heels of the Horizon scandal is as tone deaf as it is immoral. CWU members are victims of the Horizon scandal – and for them to now fear for their jobs ahead of Christmas is yet another cruel attack."
