A man appeared in court today (Wednesday) charged with assaulting two prison officers and escape. Johnathan Windsor, 31, did not enter any pleas and his case was sent to the crown court following a two-minute appearance at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court.

Windsor, of no fixed abode, appeared in court charged with assaulting two prison officers and escaping from lawful custody. The particulars of the escape charge state that on or before October 7 this year the defendant escaped from lawful custody in Salford.

Mr Windsor is also charged with assaulting an emergency worker, namely prison officer Leonard Izzard, while he was 'acting in the exercise of his functions as such a worker by beating him'.

The defendant is also charged with common assault of another emergency worker, namely prison officer Vicky Timbrell, while 'acting in the exercise of her functions as such a worker by beating her'.

He allegedly escaped from officers on Monday (October 7) during a visit to the Salford Royal Hospital.

Mr Windsor, wearing a light grey tracksuit, appeared in the dock flanked by two dock officers and in handcuffs. He spoke to confirm his date of birth and his solicitor, Peter Casson, confirmed his client's current address.

The charges against the defendant were read out. No pleas were entered. District Judge John Rowan told the defendant he would be sending the case to the crown court.

Prosecutor Nicola Peers applied for the defendant to be remanded into custody. Mr Casson made no application for bail on behalf of his client.

DJ Rowan remanded the defendant in custody. He told the defendant: "Stand up please. Your case is going to the crown court at Crown Square on November 13 for a pre-trial preparation hearing."

He formally remanded Mr Windsor into custody. Mr Windsor was then escorted out of the dock by the two dock officers. The hearing lasted two minutes.

The defendant will next appear at Manchester Crown Court on November 13 for a pre-trial preparation hearing.
